Aquarius Fire Museum Honors Veterans and Firefighters
The Aquarius #1 Fire Museum
in Peterborough, NH is using the engraved brick program as a way
of honoring two very important groups of people-veterans who have
given their lives to protect our freedom, and firefighters who have
either given their lives to save others or continue to risk their
safety daily in service to others. The memorial park where the bricks
and markers are installed is divided into sections-Veterans (which
spans World War I, World War II, The Korean War, and the Viet Nam
War), Deceased Firefighters, Honorary Firefighters, Firefighters
of the Year, and a Family Section. The park is located at the Peterborough
Fire Department Complex.
Loved ones of these veterans and
firefighters can purchase an engraved brick or granite marker to
recognize and honor them. The money raised is being used to restore
the museum building and antique fire equipment.
This program has sparked community
interest and involvement, with people in their 60's and 70's buying
bricks for siblings who were killed in World War II. Stories of
community members who courageously fought for our country have resurfaced
and are being told again. Visitors go to the park to remember loved
ones and reflect on the past. In many cases, the individuals honored
in the park do not have gravesites that their loved ones can visit,
and the park serves that important purpose. |
